He studied at St John's University (Collegeville, Minnesota) where he formed many of his opinions that shaped his art. His early works reflected a liberal Catholic flavor. He moved to Saskatchewan where he produced religious works in silver and bronze. He later turned to welded steel abstracts. John Cullen taught for many years at the University of Regina.
